Renewing Your Gas Safe Registration: Essential Tips and Procedures

Feature image

Gas is the most economical and safe energy source these days. It is equally useful for domestic and non-domestic purposes. In homes, it is used for cooking, heating, and hot water supply. Gas is supplied either directly to the homes through a pipeline network or cylinders and bottles.

Generally, gas use is quite safe for homes and commercial units but carries a few risks and threats. The risks associated with gas are mostly fire, explosions, and emissions. To make it even safer for domestic and non-domestic use, the concerned authorities worldwide, including the UK, formulate various rules and regulations.

Gas Safe Register is the official organization in the UK responsible for regulating the registration of gas safety engineers, who are authorized to work on gas installations and appliances, strictly in conformity with the prevalent rules and regulations. Under the provisions of the law, only a "gas safe registered" engineer is authorized to conduct the annual gas safety inspection for issuing the Gas Safety Certificate to landlords. Hence, registering a gas safety engineer, with the gas safe register is of much importance.

What is the Gas Safe Register?

Gas Safe Register is the official organization in the UK that officially registers gas businesses and gas safety engineers to work on gas appliances. It is a licensing authority. It replaced the previous such body, CORGI. After replacing CORGI, the Gas Safe Register is now the only official licensing body for the registration of gas businesses and engineers.

The gas safe register maintains the list of gas businesses. These businesses can then conduct gas-related work under their registered name. The gas safe register issues a registration number to all such registered businesses. Gas safety engineers are mostly the employees of these businesses. However, each engineer is also registered with the gas-safe register and issued a unique gas-safe identity card. Any gas safety engineer holding this ID card can work on the gas appliances. This card is valid for one year and needs to be renewed each year.

Gas Safe Register - Rules and Regulations

The gas safe register is responsible for implementing all the relevant gas safety Rules and Regulations currently in practice or amended from time to time. These laws include:

  1. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 for Great Britain.
  2. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994 for the Isle of Man
  3. The Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 for Northern Ireland
  4. The Health and Safety (Gas) (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2006 for Guernsey
  5. The Building Bye-Laws (Jersey) 2007 for Jersey

These laws equally apply to types of gas supply, whether through pipe networks or Cylinders (LPG).

The gas safe registration is conducted by the gas safe registration in collaboration with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to ensure the safety of consumers. So, the businesses that are registered with the gas safe register are confirmed as the legal businesses to conduct gas-related work. It is, therefore, important for businesses to get registered with the gas safe register.
